By the time my first son was three, my husband and I had only been away from him to enjoy the hospitality of Alta Bates Hospital for the birth of his little brother. I was ready to get away! If the idea of leaving your baby or toddler for a big trip involving an airplane is still too scary, may I suggest invoking Camp Grandma and sneaking off to San Francisco for a getaway night or two?
Hotel Vitale is located a short BART trip away from the East Bay right near the Ferry Building. It has decadent rooms that are urban chic with an Asian inspiration (totally unlike my toy-strewn bungalow). Splurge on a room with a view or a hot tub (or both!). Get a massage in Spa Vitale. See the city lights from the rooftop garden. Wake up refreshed to room service or a walk along the Embarcadero to the Blue Bottle coffee kiosk.
Even if you never leave your room, you will enjoy the mini vacation. According to their website, they really want to help you chill out:
Each of the 200 guestrooms at Hotel Vitale is designed with nurturing in mind, featuring limestone covered bathrooms, luxurious sheets, along with a soft and subtle color scheme. All of the luxury hotel touches associated with four-star service are offered in each and every guestroom, including complimentary Wi-Fi or high-speed Internet access, 28″ or 32″ LCD flat screen televisions, iPod/MP3 docking station, cd player/clock radio, honor bar, with both decadent and refreshing items, healthful options. In keeping with the hotel name – Vitale, which translates to Vitality – all rooms and suites in the hotel are non-smoking.
