According to my friend Marla, who knows everything, Ikea beds are the route to go if you only want them to last five years. Great! If you’re ready to buy bunk beds for your kids, here are a few (510) places to visit:
- Berkeley Kids Room – Specialty children’s furniture store with a kid-friendly showroom. They have a huge range of prices. Beds are pretty sturdy and have many fun touches like slides and tent-canopies. We purchased our sons’ loft here.
6022 College Avenue (at Claremont) Oakland
(510) 420-0811
www.berkeleykids.com - Costco – Far from feeling like a locavore, shopping at Costco means picking up a bed (or two) along with your groceries, gas, and toilet paper. Beds seem solid and you can browse online before you go. Prices vary.
4801 Central Avenue Richmond
(510) 898-2003
www.costco.com - Mancini’s Sleepworld – A salesperson tipped me off that anything north of $600 is great quality that your kids will outgrow before it wears out. Watch for sales around big holiday weekends (President’s Day, Memorial Day…).
1099 Ashby Avenue (at San Pablo) Berkeley
(510) 540-8000

Wondering how soon is too soon? The APA recommends holding off on top bunk until your child is six. Just saying.
