Jared Brandt runs Donkey and Goat Winery in Berkeley with his wife Tracey. In 2001, they left their day jobs to become expert winemakers. With each passing year and successful vintage, they know that they made the right choice. If you visit their new family-friendly tasting room in Berkeley, you may also see daughter Isabel running the family business. The tasting room is especially kid-friendly during the warmer months with chalk, 5 foot high basket ball hoops, bocce ball and several bikes.
Thanks to Jared for sharing his favorite East Bay places.
Favorite restaurant to eat as a family?
Gather, in Berkeley and the very sadly burned down Great China are both great places with kids. Gather will make the perfect fickle kid pizza. Isabel, Age 7 wanted to have her birthday party there. The staff is always great with the kids as well. Great China, upstairs, was our other favorite restaurant with the kids. Getting a table upstairs and getting James, the owner, to bring in his kids assured a perfect meal with kids running wild.
Favorite rainy day hideout?
Our new rainy day hideout is the pool at the Albany high school. Water is warm enough for the kids to swim for hours and leave exhausted.
Favorite park or playground and what you like about it?
This is a tie between Memorial Park in Albany – we love it since we can walk and Adventure Park in the Berkeley Marina. Isabel loves the zip line at Adventure Park.
What is your neighborhood best known for?
We live off Solano Ave in Albany. I don’t know the name of the neighborhood. Having lived in the hills before, this is perfect for us. We can walk to dinner, the grocery store, CVS etc. While I sometimes miss the view, I love our neighborhood.
Cactus or Picante?
Picante. It is close to our business (a block) and our school, Black Pine Circle, tends to go in mass on half days. Isabel used to love Cactus but this has some how fallen out of favor. (Perhaps the one in Rockridge is better than the Solano Ave location.)
Favorite date night destination?
Zut in Berkeley for dinner and then the Punchdown in Oakland for a glass of wine. Going to San Francisco used to be top of our list, but now we tend to just do that for work.
