A few years ago I went to an adults-only birthday party session at Trapeze Arts in Oakland. So awesome. I felt cool for weeks because I did a mid-air “catch” (an experienced instructor grabbed my hands in mid-air while I was dangling). See my video evidence below.
Now that some time has passed without my further exploring a lifelong fantasy of joining the circus, the high has worn off. But enough about me, Trapeze Arts is a terrific place for thrill-seekers of all ages! They host classes and parties for kids as young as four. Not ready to swing on the high trapeze? Other “circus skills parties” are on the menu with names like contortion, trampoline, Chinese acrobatics, juggling, tightwire, and tumbling.
The staff are super friendly and helpful. I couldn’t believe how patient they were with my nagging fear of heights and crazy sweaty palms. I would feel comfortable putting my kids in their hands for a series of classes or a party (even more UP than Pump it UP!). Kids’ circus classes are from 10am to noon on Saturdays and are offered in ten week sessions at varying price points. Children as young as 3 can join the Tiny Tots circus class. Other trapeze and acrobatic classes are offered on Wednesday afternoons.
If you’ve never been, I’ll mention that the facility is in a somewhat dodgy part of Oakland, a dead-end abutting the freeway at 9th St near Pine. See the Trapeze Arts website for detailed schedule of events, rates, and what to wear!
Now, about that video I mentioned…
