Favorite Bay Area outings for mad scientists

Ken Denmead is a husband and father from the San Francisco Bay Area, where he works as a civil engineer and the the author of the Geek Dad series of books including the new one: The Geek Dad Book for Aspiring Mad Scientists: The Coolest Experiments and Projects for Science Fairs and Family Fun. I asked him for his favorite local outings for curious kids and parents.

I spent many, many hours of my youth getting lost in the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley, which has an amazing array of hands-on tools for fun science learning, and sports one of the most amazing views in the Bay Area. The Chabot Science Center has become a go-to destination for exploring the wonders of our universe and getting kids jazzed about space exploration. The Exploratorium in San Francisco, and The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose also make for great science trips.

For the technology buff, the Computer History Museum in Mountain View can be an amazing trip down computer memory lane. And for those who are passionate about the ecology of the Bay Area, the Bay Model in Sausalito is an amazing experience.

In addition to the books, Ken is the publisher and editor of GeekDad, the parenting blog for Wired magazine’s online presence, and publisher of the companion blog, GeekMom, where along with a group of other dedicated, geeky parents he posts projects, book and movie reviews, weekly podcasts, and more about being a parent and being a geek.
