Oakland resource for babies: Tulip Grove

We went to the Tulip Grove in Montclair the other day because I was desperate to weigh my slow-gaining baby. Weight checks are just one of the many perks of a visit to Tulip Grove.

If you don’t spend much time in Montclair, you are missing out on this gem. It’s an adorable boutique with cute “gifty” baby things mixed with super practical gear, all selected by experienced moms of very young children. You’ll find modern design in environmentally-friendly products such as infant clothing, toys, nursing bras, pumps, and strollers. The staff is super friendly and helpful with advice.

If you make it past the cute onesies in the window, there is a nursing moms lounge with changing supplies and a baby scale. I can attest that all are in working order and very comfortable. Dozens of classes are offered for new and expectant parents. Classes are up-to-date with the real trends and statistics in parenting (for example, 70% of moms delivering babies in Alta Bates get epidurals so they cover those realities in the childbirth prep classes).

Membership to the shop provides discounts and preferred access to events, but all are welcome. If my baby weren’t currently such a car-seat-hater, I’d be in there all the time. There are also classes in the new Rockridge location.
