Jennifer Bunkers, Piedmont mom, is the creator of TruKid sunscreen and bath products, which is based in Oakland. She coaches a variety of sports (girls’ volleyball, boys’ sand volleyball and boys’ baseball) and is the incoming President of EO Entrepreneurs Organization, where she mentors and works hand in hand with fellow business owners. Today she answers our questions about her busy family life in the Bay Area.
If we see your family out and about, the first question we ask might be “How many kids do you have?” so you may as well answer that first!
I have six children: four girls and two boys. They are 7, 10, 12, 14, 17 and 21 — and yes, I birthed them all myself!
What’s a day like when you’ve got the kids on your own?
If it is a day we can hang around the house and not rush off to an event, we all hang out in my bed and talk about the day and try to figure something out. Usually we get a very late start and then it typically ends up with miscellaneous errands that include someone needing shoes! What, shoes again?
On Saturday, I usually go to a kid’s sports event of some kind. But on Sundays…my kids participate in raising pigs 4-H — so on Sunday mornings, as a family, we go to the pig barn and weigh the pigs, take them out for a walk, then go out and have donuts (usually smelling like pigs!)
What other classes or kids activities are you a big fan of?
Sprouts Cooking School. My 12 yr old has taken four different classes with a friend. Amazing!
Any discovery you want to tell every new parent about in the East Bay?
The hidden walking trails everywhere, and some are so cool that that they make you feel like you are visitng some faraway place, and the walk turns into an adventure. (Editor’s note: Berkeley Path Wanderers are a great source to get secret walking paths from and so is this book.)
What’s your date night tip for other East Bay parents?
The New Parkway Theatre with it’s comfy couches and onsite food and beer; and www.dateboxclub.com, my friend’s new site that I am using for ideas of new and cool dates. (I couldn’t seem to be creative for dates, but now I am!) I also love to go see comedy in San Francisco.
What’s your favorite family dinner out?
The Taqueria in Montclair Village
What’s your favorite way to spend alone time, when you get it?
Our local FootSpa, I am over due!
What are you looking forward to doing when your kids get older?
Italy! (And their new bucket list destination: Dubai. Ok, sure!)
Jennifer Bunkers founded TruKid in 2008 to provide healthy, natural personal care for kids.
