Now that we’ve gotten to know every square inch of our own homes, many of us are itching to change it up. Since we’re not ready to move to the next phase of re-opening in California, let’s take a look at what we can do within the confines of our current situation.

According to the Frequently Asked Questions about the Shelter-In-Place order updates shared at the end of April, here are outdoor activities we can enjoy, as long as we stay 6 feet apart and keep fabric masks on our faces when that’s not possible. (Source: covid19.ca.gov)
- Athletics –Â Head to a grassy area with a glove and ball to play catch.
- Badminton (singles) – Backyard games with your own family. We have gotten a lot of mileage out of pickle ball paddles and balls, even without space for a net in our backyard.
- BMX biking –Â Dirt World is open
- Canoeing (singles) – I guess if you can BYO
- Crabbing – Half Moon Bay is fantastic for this tricky activity
- Cycling – where to learn to bike in the East Bay,
- Exploring Rock Pools –Â The parking lot for Crab Cove visitor center is closed, but you can park on the street and walk to the tidepools at this Alameda beach location.
- Gardening (not in groups) – East Bay Gardening Tips, including plant stores that are open
- Golf (singles, walking – no cart) – Where to play a round of golf with kids
- Hiking (trails/ paths allowing distancing) – Keep an eye on this list from the EB Regional Parks for updates
- Jogging and running – Kids can be motivated by time trials or distance goals.
- Kicking a soccer ball (not in groups) – Bring your own goal (we like this set that comes in a carrying case)
- Kite Boarding and Kitesurfing – Head to Shimada Friendship Park in Richmond to stroll and watch the kitesurfers if you’re not equipped to do it yourself!
- Meditation – Pick a beautiful spot that’s hidden from people walking by
- Outdoor Photography – EVERYWHERE!
- Picnics (with your stay-home household members only) — order a family-size meal to make it easier.
- Quad Biking – This might be stretching it in an effort to have a Q activity, but if there’s any time to splurge on a Power Wheels-style toy, perhaps it’s while we are sheltering in place.
