Alameda’s Sand Castle & Sculpture Contest is June 1

Save the date and scare up your sand tools: Saturday, June 1, 2024, is the 56th Annual Alameda Sand Castle/Sculpture Contest and it’s completely approachable for amateur sandcastle builders.

You’ll want to grab your shovels, pails, and your children and head over to Crown Memorial Beach for fun in the sand, but you’ve got to get there early to find parking in the main lot. (9 am should be fine.)

Register upon arrival between 9 am and 11 am for this FREE program with viewing and judging at noon.

Attending this event without participating is also a fun way to spend a day. See what Alameda’s Crown Beach has to offer >

What to expect at the Alameda Sandcastle Contest

Before 9 am, plots of sand will be marked off by stakes and rope so that registered teams may be assigned a square, identified by a number. People tend to set up their chairs behind their building area.

Bring your own tools.

Some families or teams will be winging it, making big castles, while some more serious builders will have a photo printed out and be following a plan. Everyone else is lounging on the beach or playing in the water.

Award presentation is at 1 pm.

There are some serious sand castle builders there and some amazing sculptures. But there’s also a separate “competition” for entries built by families and by kids-under-12-only.

Get busy with digging and create a work of art, or simply walk around and admire others’ creations. Categories include castles and sculptures by 12 and under, 13 and over, and families.

The event is co-sponsored by the East Bay Regional Park District, Alameda Recreation & Parks, and the Bay View Women’s Club.
