Places Where Kids Can Rock Out: Music Camps and Classes in Oakland and Berkeley

Would your child (or you) be more motivated to practice an instrument if the music had a beat? Would you rather hear Green Day or Taylor Swift at your child’s concert than Mozart or Beethoven?

What follows is a list of local rock band programs for kids that place students into groups based on their age, experience, and availability, which parents identify via an online form or over the phone when they register. Each band in the program has an assigned teacher for the session and a practice room with instruments, including a drum kit, plus amps and microphones to use.

Both school year classes and summer camps tend to culminate in an open-to-the-public performance in a cool venue.

  1. There’s an excellent girls rock program, based in Oakland — Bay Area Girls Rock Camp.
    https://www.bayareagirlsrockcamp.org/
    They have (3) one-week summer sessions, and a 10-week winter after-school program.

There’s small-group instrument instruction, on guitar, bass, vocals, keyboard, drums.
Kids form bands — each band writes an original song, which they perform at the end of the program, in public.
Many of the kids receive financial aid, the application is easy to do.
    BAGRC provides all instruments.
