LEGO at-home party: They bring all the LEGO to you

In this, the era of convenience apps and one-hour delivery, of course, you don’t have to buy thousands of pieces of LEGO to throw a fabulous party. You can actually have someone bring the LEGO to you…and clean it all up…and take it away! I know, genius idea, right? Here are a few local East Bay LEGO businesses that will make your LEGO party dreams come true.

Play-Well TEKnologies birthday parties in your house:

Play-Well will bring the party to your home or another indoor site of your choice. They will bring thousands of pieces and a themed project, from race cars to catapults (many have motorized components). A friendly instructor leads the party guests in a project, so you can sit back and watch your little ones engage their engineering skills in a fun and playful environment. Just be aware that you don’t get to keep the LEGO project you build. If that seems like it might be difficult for your party goers, consider having other small LEGO kits as party favors. Then at least they’ll get to bring home a project of their own.

Cost and how it works with Play-Well:
The ideal size for the party is at least 10 kids. But you can customize when booking your reservation. There is a $100 deposit, and parties are $300+.  They’ll arrive and set up the party, lead the kids in a project for about 1- 1 ½ hours, and then clean up while you move on to other activities (cake? presents? pinata?). You provide everything but the LEGO.

A Real Life LEGO Party/Play-Well Review:
As luck would have it, my friend Leah just threw her 7-year old daughter an epic LEGO birthday bash with the help of Play-Well. And from what she says, it was awesome.

Leah’s daughter had already participated in a Play-Well class at her elementary school. Thus the format was familiar and fun. The set-up, instruction and breakdown process was super helpful. It kept the party moving and the mess contained. Accordingly, this is the expensive part, and what you’re paying for.

For her part, Leah leveraged all the amazing LEGO Party ideas on Pinterest and did it up right DIY-style (see below). First off, she saved her Amazon shipping boxes for a few weeks. Then she wrapped them up in cheap primary colored table cloths for some fun life sized LEGO decorations (finally a good use for Amazon boxes!). She scored the other party paraphernalia (plates, napkins, balloons, etc.) at the local Dollar Store (apparently Target and Party City were sadly lacking). And party favors on Amazon. Add a homemade LEGO cake, some rambunctious little engineers, and TA-DA, the stuff magical 7-year old birthday parties are made of.

Homemade LEGO party decor. Nailed it!

Leah’s pro tips and lessons learned:

  • There may be a few non-LEGO fanatics in attendance (gasp!). So think about having a separate station or room with a non-LEGO activity (painting, coloring, decorating cupcakes, or just playing outside).
  • If you have the party at your house, make sure to have floor space available for the instructor to set up.

The Bottom Line: Leah says her daughter loved the party. So even though it cost more than her normal budget for a birthday party, it was totally worth it.

Bricks 4 Kidz in Alameda

Bricks 4 Kidz is currently suspending its in-person parties right now. Alternatively, though, they’re offering an affordable Zoom option that might work for your family. Your birthday kid gets to invite up to five friends to join them for 45 mins on Zoom where an instructor will lead the building of LEGO creations, share what everyone is building and do some challenges as a group. Each guest will need access to a Zoom call and their own LEGO bin to build from at home. The cost is $75 and is payable via Venmo.

BrickSpace in Benicia

BrickSpace is a STEM Lab and Creativity Center in Benicia. This is a great option if you don’t want to have your LEGO party at your home.

The parties are two hours long, with agendas varying by age group. For preschoolers, there is free build time, crafts, circle time and a themed build (think My Little Pony, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Zoo Animals). Then there’s time for cake and drinks, which you bring yourself. You will also get to complete a mini-build project that the kids will get to take home. For kids age 5+, there are mini-challenges, mat activities (quiz and obstacle course), a theme build, and the same cake/drink/mini-build project to take home.

Cost and how it works at BrickSpace:
A BrickSpace party package includes 75 minutes of themed building activities, 30 minutes in the party room for cake and drinks (bring your own), 15 minutes of free play, one completed project party favor to take home. It costs $300 for the first 10 child guests and $30 for each additional child guest. Parents just have to bring cake and drinks.
