The Lake Chabot Marina is one freeway exit south of the Oakland Zoo. It offers families a fun, pandemic-safe outing with boats of all kinds available to rent.
Choose from kayaks, peddle boats, motorboats, and pontoon boats.
“We paid a little more for the motorboat that had a cover, but I am glad we did. It would have been really sunny without it. We rented our boat for two hours and saw the whole lake,” said Oakland florist and mom, Alyson Vitt.
“It was the perfect amount of time with a 3.5 and 5.5-year-old. We took snacks. Bringing a nice lunch would have been good, too.”
The folks who manage the Marina have arranged for something special this month. Pre-orders of an indulgent Valentine’s Day experience will include a pontoon boat, a fancy lunch, and thematic decor on your boat.
While they’re intending this special for couples, we think families will enjoy it too. (I would just bring snacks for the kids!) Two-hour use of a decorated patio boat with a catered basket of Italian goodies is $199 Monday through Thursday and $249 Friday through Sunday. Add a box of charcuterie for $25 when you order. Reserve tickets >>
For another $2, they allow dogs on the boats. (But hold onto your charcuterie!) “We were excited because our Boston Terrier goes everywhere with us,” the Vitt family told me via Instagram.
Share more local love. The Valentine’s Love at the Lake special includes goodies provided by two, mom-owned small businesses in Castro Valley for the Italian platter (Al Dente Events) and Charcuterie Box (Brie Grazing Boards), so you’ll be showing them love when you book this outing, too.
