The Bay Area Book Festival is turning five the weekend of May 4 & 5 in downtown Berkeley, celebrating its most extensive children, youth and young adult programming ever. Northern California’s premier weekend literary event aims to inspire a future generation of readers through author talks, storytelling, and literary-themed shows on three outdoor stages in the festival’s free outdoor fair; DIY and STEAM activities in the free, interactive Family Fun Zone; and free admission for youth (under age 18) to a host of ticketed indoor events featuring popular YA authors.
The Festival’s Outdoor Fair is a lively, immersive experience where readers meet writers and diverse communities gather to celebrate a love of books and reading. More than 200 literary exhibitors will delight you, free stages present acclaimed authors, and performances and fun activities for all ages abound. This year, a German Pavilion highlights the literature and attractions of that country (stop by to learn a bit of German, too). At the Center for the Art of Translation/Poetry Inside Out booth, try your hand at translating poetry, guided by experts!
Find a wide array of children’s programs at the outdoor fair; the StoryTime Circle, Word Power Stage and Young Readers Stage are all scheduled to the brim with intelligent and fun conversations, literature death matches, and performances for and by our younger audience.
