The tradition of Lunar New Year is celebrated around the world, and at the Oakland Museum of California, the annual event explores connections between the many diverse Asian cultures represented around the Bay Area, including Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tibetan, Japanese, Malaysian, Indian, Bhutanese, and more.
The event will include spectacular lucky lion and dragon dances by Developing Virtue Secondary School, dazzling illusions by the Magic of Jade and Perry Yan the Magician, a Taekwondo demonstration by Intensity Martial Arts, Korean drum dance by OngDance Company & School, Garba dance by Sahiyar Dance Troupe, Bhutanese traditional dances by Bay Area Bhutanese Youth, Lunar New Year storytime with author, Oliver Chin, and more! Learn how to drink Gongfu Cha tea with Fabula Tea and enjoy a cooking demonstration with Berkeley Buddhist Monastery. Make a Tibetan prayer flag with Thangka painting master Jamyong Singye, and create your own Bok Jumoni, a traditional Korean lucky bag with artist Youngmin Lee.
Families will enjoy a visit from live farm animals with Little Explorers Petting Zoo. Enjoy a delicious Asian-influenced menu from Blue Oak café, as well as a selection of Asian-influenced food trucks to make a whole day of your visit.
OMCA is conveniently located one block from the Lake Merritt BART station Limited flat rate parking will be available during the event for $7.
