Lunar New Year x Black History Month: Celebration of Black & Asian Solidarity

Join on February 4th for our Lunar New Year x Black History Month community celebration to strengthen, heal, and empower AAPI and Black & African-American communities!

OACC is collaborating with the Malonga Arts Residence Association (MARA) to create an intentional space for Black History and Future in Oakland Chinatown while continuing to honor Asian American cultural traditions. This event will spotlight performers that celebrate arts and culture in Oakland, and highlight how our communities are intertwined through both our similarities and differences.

Performances

We are delighted to feature harpist and composer Destiny Muhammad, the Harpist from the Hood, whose genre is cool and eclectic with a feel of Jazz & storytelling to round out the sonic experience.

Marketplace
Our Auditorium will include a marketplace for vendors and organizations that serve the Oakland community. You’ll find goods and services from Black and Asian artists and small businesses, as well as resources for the community. Stay tuned for an update on participating vendors and organizations!

Exhibition and Gallery
Our featured exhibition is Bandung to the Bay, which showcases the history of Black and Asian solidarity across various movements. This exhibition consists of historical, archival documents connected to the international Bandung Conference and Bay Area Asian & Black activist solidarity movements including the Black Panther Party of Self-Defense.

Literature Fair
Our Literature Fair will host all things reading related, including a book giveaway and featured book vendors Bandung Books and Eastwind Books of Berkeley. It will also host a special poetry and storytelling session by Journey, featuring Tureeda Mikell, Tarika Lewis, Val Serrant, Tacuma King, and Genny Lim.
