Join for Storyland: Family Story Hour at Chapter 510 on Saturday, July 5th!

This interactive storytime is specially designed for children ages 4–8, but all ages are welcome to join in the fun.

Doors open at 9:30 AM—come early to enjoy coffee and hot chocolate before they dive into some engaging stories and songs celebrating Filipino cultural heritage. Stories will start 10:00 am sharp. Expect lively read-alouds, art activities, and a space for young readers and their families to connect and explore the joy of storytelling.

Featured Readers:
Christina Newhard is a Filipina American designer, writer, and publisher. She founded Sari-Sari Storybooks to share the rich diversity of Philippine cultures through picture books. A former New Yorker, Christina lives in Oakland with tiny, vocal cat named Princess Genghis. She is most at home in a city by the water.

Ara Chawdhury Ara Chawdhury is a Bisaya Bengali transmedia storyteller and human rights activist. Her debut feature Miss Bulalacao screened at the YBCA’s 2016 Best of Philippine Cinema program. Marichin Marukoy: Mangayo Ko’g Asin (May I Have Some Salt?) is her first children’s book.

Featured Musical Artists:
Christina Busler is an Oakland musician originally from the Bay Area. She currently plays in bands including Christina’s Trip (indie/alternative rock), Buddy Junior (emogaze), and Whateverglades (twangy rock n roll). Christina studied performing arts and social justice at University of San Francisco and previously taught at rock music school 3 O’clock Rock in downtown Oakland.

Featured Collaborators:
Sari Sari Storybooks publishes bilingual Filipino children’s books in Philippine mother tongues. These stories of kindness, courage, and magic celebrate the rich diversity of the Philippines with young readers in the motherland and diaspora. The press was founded by Christina Newhard in 2012, with the first three titles published in 2017: Melo the Umang-Boy, Kalipay and the Tiniest Tiktik, and Amina and the City of Flowers. Sandangaw followed in 2018, and most recently, Jalal and the Lake in 2023. These books are bilingual in Ivatan, Cebuano, Chavacano, Waray, and Meranaw, with a board book now in production.

Chapter 510 is a made-in-Oakland youth writing, bookmaking & publishing center. Our teaching artists and volunteers work side by side with educators to provide a safe space and supportive community so Black, brown, and queer youth ages 8-19 can bravely write.
