When my friend Naomi lived in town, she always did the coolest things. In fact, she turned me and Whitney on to horse races for the pre-K set! She and her kiddos – one preschooler and one toddler – would spend the afternoon at the Golden Gate Fields horse race tracks on NFL Sundays.
Children under 17 are already free but on “NFL Sundays”, everything is one dollar: admission is $1 plus $1 hot dogs, $1 beer, $1 ice cream sandwiches, $1 programs, $1 minimum bets, and even $1 parking (use Buchanan Street Exit for General Admission/Parking).
A race starts about every half hour, so you might only see two races, but you can entertain your kid by looking at horses and licking ice cream sandwiches or eating popcorn, right? When the horses start racing, it gets more than a little exciting.
The action for the day starts after 12:30 and runs until about 4:45 pm.
If you’re a football fan, check out the NFL End Zone area at the track equipped with 16 plasma tvs, great views of the track, and ample seating! It’s the perfect place to spend your Sundays; betting on the ponies and watching your favorite NFL teams while enjoying the Dollar Day discounts!
Golden Gate Fields is in Albany, right next to the Gilman exit of Interstate 80. Resumes in August and continues through the fall. What have you got to lose? Just a couple bucks.
