RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style & Wisdom is the name of the immersive, hands-on, historical exhibit happening at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) NOW through August 12, 2018 in the Great Hall Gallery for an extra $4 tacked onto your admission price.

This specially curated celebration of Hip-Hop culture, music, art, and fashion is a party (but Whitney wants to remind you that it is still totally a museum!) and everyone’s invited. Children of all ages will likely enjoy the Dojo, where experimenting, practicing, and learning is encouraged. Parents will alternate between dancing and reminiscing about childhood. Want to try your hand at a mixing beats or dancing? There’s a station for that, too!

What to expect at RESPECT: Hip-Hop Style & Wisdom exhibit

Graffiti, b-boying and b-girling, MCing, wisdom. The first section is the interactive Dojo: a practice and performance event space that will come alive with movement and sound as a kind of master class for Hip-Hop enthusiasts. One large wall includes a continuous loop of dance lessons so you can jump in at any time. Visitors of all ages and abilities are invited to experiment with scratching on real beat-making equipment, sit on bleachers to socialize and play chess, or watch other museum goers perform in this space. This room is the most fun.

More sophisticated children will join you on a walk through the remaining rooms, exploring Hip-Hop culture as a bridge across ethnicities, regions, and backgrounds. Audio tours provide a first-person account that emphasizes California’s contribution to global Hip-Hop culture, one of the most influential cultural and social movements of the last 50 years. Artists from many different disciplines contributed to the colorful, vibrant collection.
