Do you want a side of cool with your breakfast pancakes? Either of these places will fit the bill. There are two fabulous, but different, hipster diners that I want to pit against one another in a fiery brawl for supremacy among the trendy parents: Mama’s Royal Cafe and Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe. Are you with me?
Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe is a fun, punk diner more famous for its owners (members of the band Green Day) than the food. Open until 1AM every night, it’s a great place to go after date-night when you’re still hankering for dessert. But let’s talk about kids and breakfast. Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe is the perfect spot in Emeryville for up-early breakfast. Colorful and kitschy cafe is decorated with old toys so there’s always something fun to look at. They serve Peet’s coffee and yummy breakfast treats (basic omelets, pancakes, etc.). Crayons, coloring placemat, fun decor, and cheerios for the little ones right when you sit down. Plenty of room to stow a stroller too. Open every day from 7am to 1am. Come within the first hour and you’ll always get a seat. Around 8:15, the lines start. A second larger location is in Oakland.
Mama’s is a small, tasty diner adorned with aprons and colorful old radios. There are a handful of highchairs and boosters. Just like at Rudy’s, fun decorations give curious guests plenty to look at. The food is delicious, they are dedicated to serving quality food made from the finest ingredients (AKA the best local products such as Niman Ranch meats, Acme bread, Petaluma eggs, Le Pique-Nique sausages, & Peerless coffee). Super yum. Mama’s Royal is open Monday-Friday breakfast 7am-2:30pm lunch 11:30-2:30 Saturday/Sunday breakfast 8am-3:00pm. Because of limited parking, healthy lines, and no freebie Cheerios, I suggest that Mama’s is a better place to meet your girlfriends for a weekday breakfast or lunch rather than facing the weekend crowds. CASH ONLY.
Oh, and neither place has a changing table.
So, what do you think about this smackdown?
