JAMTOWN, an Oakland resource for kids age 4 and up, offers everything basketball. From camps and classes to birthday parties, JAMTOWN offers everything a developing player needs — a lighted, weatherproof set of courts with intact rims and nets, for starters.
I've seen the JAMTOWN sign for years as I drive Southbound on 880, a huge mural of Steph Curry currently calling attention to the building, right across the freeway from Lake Merritt, about ten blocks from the Oakland Museum of California.
Rates and Programs at JAMTOWN
A monthly membership fee ($49 as of this writing) allows kids to drop in as many days as they like Monday through Thursday for after school trainings and clinics.
4-7 year-olds will receive the guidance of a trainer from 4-5 pm in the Jr. Jammers sessions, on courts where the hoop has been lowered to 8 feet. These clinics teach fundamentals such as dribbling, shooting, footwork and body control. The kids will get to know the rules of the game and will be separated by age and skill level.
8-14 year-olds have a standard hoop height and play from 5-7 pm, focusing more on skill development, such as defense or ball handling. Similar to a yoga studio, the schedule of classes is listed online and players can decide which clinics to attend, based on topics, and members can register for anything in that timeslot, Monday through Thursday.
Drop-in shooting is for all ages and available at $8/visit or 10 visits for $60.
Members who want to play more can join a JAMTOWN team (ages 7+), through which they will play games and tournaments on the weekends.
JAMTOWN also offers camps, birthday parties, and court rental for your team or organization, as well as adult pick-up and open shoot hours. Adult leagues are offered at two skill levels for grown-ups who want to play.
