Today's guest reporter is Victoria, an 11-year old drummer who lives in Oakland and Pinole.
Bay Area Girls Rock Camp is a fun place! It’s an all-girls space where we can go to learn to play instruments, create a band, make new friends, experience fun workshops, and perform at a showcase at the end of the program.
There are two programs in Bay Area Girls Rock Camp.
You go there from 8:30 to 4:30. We all play games before the morning assembly. During the morning assembly Carrie (the owner of B.A.G.R.C) tells us what we will be doing and presents a skit every morning. The skit teaches us how to behave and have fun at B.A.G.R.C. in a funny way through a skit.
At lunchtime if you don’t have a lunch, it’s ok! Just talk to one of the staff members earlier and they will have a lunch for you. They also give you snacks throughout the day too. We do have a thing at the end of the day too. It’s called Open Mic. You can sing, tell a joke, read out loud a poem, play a drum solo, etc.
I don’t know if there is any space left for Summer 2015 sessions. But, that doesn’t mean you just miss out, because next we’re on to the afterschool program! The afterschool program is still the same thing as summer camp, only slightly different. It starts at 3:00 and ends at 6:00 and is located at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts in Oakland. At the beginning we sing karaoke, waiting for everyone to get there. If you don’t want to sing it’s ok because we play games too. The younger girls go on Tuesdays. The older girls (teenagers) go on Thursdays. Like in the summer camp, at the end of the program you perform on the following Saturday at The New Parish, a real live nightclub down the street from the Oakland School of Arts.
(Editor's note: Summer camp is over for 2015.)
Bay Area Girls Rock Camp is basically a place where you can express yourself musically. We are welcome to ALL girls. Lesbian, transgender, etc. We love everyone and we all are all accepting, too. The camp takes children from the ages 8-18.
If you get too old for Girls Rock Camp, don’t worry! They even have a Women’s Rock Camp! And best of all, there is always financial aid available. There are sliding scales for everything from camp fees, to showcase admission, and even band photos! Everyone is always encouraged to apply. No experience necessary! If you know of any young ladies that have ever wanted to learn bass, drums, guitar, keyboards or vocals, they will love Bay Area Girls Rock Camp!!! Plus all instruments are provided!
The last band I was in was for Summer 2015 – Amp Affect. Every session, you form a new band and make new friends. Here is a link to some of the bands’ recordings http://www.bayareagirlsrockcamp.org/music.
Victoria and the next three Kid Reporter submissions will receive gift cards for Mr. Mopps toy store and bookstore as a thank you for their posts.
