What is Montessori education?
If you’re curious, I strongly suggest taking a tour or attending an open house to see how Montessori fosters independence. I worked in Montessori education for a few years and believe that seeing it first-hand is the best way to understand it. You’ll notice the classrooms are set up in a specific way, inviting students to choose their own projects. (They put the materials away, too, from the earliest age. It’s like magic!) The teachers provide guidance, seeking opportunities to support both perseverance and concentration, two core values baked into the Montessori approach.
For little ones, that might mean pouring water from one container to another, practicing their motor skills and capacity for self-correction, another priority of Montessori education. (A sponge will always be available next to the pouring materials for wiping spills. Life skills, for the win!) For older students, that might mean arranging rows and columns of blocks to deepen understanding of multiplication or fractions.
“My Montessori education is the foundation of my confidence. Because from a very young age, I learned how to learn.”
