National Cinema Day is coming this Sunday, August 27 and all movies in all formats are only $4 at participating theaters. I did some digging to find movie theaters near us showing kid-friendly and family-friendly titles.
Since it sounded too good to be true, I verified what shows are playing at each of the participating movie theaters. I was pleased for mid-elementary kids and teens, but there’s not much showing for the little ones right now aside from The Little Mermaid. Barbie, Super Mario and OG Jurassic Park are about the youngest fare I noticed; and there are plenty of date night options.

If this saves you any time, here are the places and movies I would spend my $8 for me and a kid:
- Grand Lake Theatre, Oakland: The Little Mermaid, Barbie, Blue Beetle (maybe!)Â
- The New Parkway, Oakland:Â Barbie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Theater Camp (maybe!)
- AMC Bay Street 16, Emeryville: The Little Mermaid, Jurassic Park, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Super Mario Bros, Barbie, Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1, Gran Turismo (my kids are way into video games, not sure if this is a wise choice)
- Regal Jack London, Oakland: DC League of Super-Pets and Spider-Man: No Way Home
- Let’s call the other ones great options for date night!
