The Oakland Aviation Museum, open Wednesday thru Sundays, is located near the Oakland airport, so although you won't stand right next to a plane that's taking off, you can both stand next to a plane — and look up in the sky to see what's just taken off.
A small play area allows children to climb inside a replica plane to explore the instruments and get in the mini-air traffic control tower and listen to real audio from a control tower.
Inside and outside the museum building, a variety of small aircraft are stationed for visitors to see. Other artifacts pay tribute to aviation history, inclusive of Black Americans in fields of Aviation and Space.
On Open Cockpit Day, ladders are positioned to invite visitors to climb inside the planes. Look for the next Open Cockpit Day on March 19, 2017.
The venue is available for birthday party rental, and reader Annmarie shared her enthusiasm for the place after hosting her son's second birthday there. “It was outstanding because kids and adults enjoyed it!”
