I had been wanting to take my husband to an Escape Room to celebrate a big anniversary recently but he thought that was the “wrong metaphor” for marriage. Fair point. Hence, I surprised him with an escape session at OMESCAPE in Richmond for a birthday present instead.
As Whitney mentioned when she reviewed another escape room in Alameda, it requires participants who are capable of solving puzzles and working as a team. These group activities last about an hour and are a perfect off-beat date night or tween/teen birthday experience.

All about Omescape in Richmond
OMESCAPE is part of a local chain of Escape Rooms, which has additional locations in San Jose and San Francisco. The Richmond location is nestled off the highway in an office park/warehouse district so we were a little bit unsure we found the right place until we got right up to the check-in desk.
OMESCAPE has three different puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty. We chose the easiest one, Room Omega, and just barely died without escaping. I think confident tweens and teens would have fun attempting it.
What is an escape room?
An escape room is a mysterious puzzle that you have to solve by moving through physical space to unlock rooms and hallways until reaching the final door to the outside world. Guests pay admission and are directed to a themed room filled with props that support a storyline. Ours had to do with the disappearance of a professor known for his theory of time travel. Related games, keys, and clues all had to do with time, clocks, calendars, etc. Clues exist in the wall art and tucked under furniture — though our guide was careful to tell us we need not smash anything or rip into the upholstery.
Tick tock. Like other escape room storylines, our doom was certain if we were unable to escape the room(s) in 60 minutes. OMESCAPE lobby walls are decorated with winning players who have completed certain rooms in a fraction of that time. If the place isn’t too busy when you’re there, OMESCAPE allows you to ask for hints and may let you play a little longer if another group isn’t booked into your same space. We survived with one hint and a few minutes over time. In other words, we totally lost.
OMESCAPE’s three escape games
There are three rooms in the Richmond location, with varying degrees of challenge.
- Room Omega is for 2-6 players and rated 3/5 difficulty — this is the one we did, and most recommended for tweens and teens.
- The Penitentiary is for 6-10 players and rated 4/5 difficulty
- Forgotten Treasure is for 5-10 players and rated 5/5 difficulty
Once you’ve exhausted all the escape room games in OMESCAPE Richmond, you can plan a trip to San Jose where OMESCAPE has five other games or check out a few other East Bay Escape Rooms. There is a list at the top of this post.
Prices are about $25 – $30 per person. Reservations strongly recommended.
