Big, tall, giant thanks to Save the Redwoods League for sponsoring today’s post and fun contest for grade schoolers.

Reading the Redwoods is a free online reading contest encourages kids in grades K-5 to discover the magic of California’s redwood forests through books and win cool prizes while doing it. To participate, click around the contest website and head to your local library!

“Books allow you to travel wherever you like – no ticket required. That’s what’s so great about Save the Redwoods League’s Reading the Redwoods contest. I invite families from everywhere to participate and discover a sense of wonder about nature,” said acclaimed author T. A. Barron, whose books include The Ancient One, the Merlin Saga, and many others.

{510} Families is excited to support this cool contest that sparks our children’s imaginations and inspires them to explore the real-life beauty of our area. Everyone who completes the contest will be entered to win the First Prize of a kids bike from Specialized, and The Grand Prize of a 3-day, 2-night stay in the redwood country with guided adventures like horseback riding or kayaking. Awesome, right?

To participate in the contest, kids do the following activities:

  • Read: Read books about redwoods, forests, or nature in general.
  • Listen: Listen to an audiobook about redwoods, forests, and nature in general.
  • Create: Create photos and artwork celebrating redwoods.
  • Observe: Witness the wonders of a redwood forest live via a redwood webcam.
  • Explore: Find the redwood park closest to your home using ExploreRedwoods.org and learn all about it. You can plan an adventure or just imagine it!

How the Reading the Redwoods contest works:

  1. Parents and guardians sign up on ReadingtheRedwoods.org with their name, email address, and city where they live. Registration automatically enters you to win that week’s prize.
  2. View and print the checklist of the five easy activities to complete by May 10, 2018.
  3. Look for weekly emails to announce prize winners, share tips and ideas, and encourage your love of Redwood Trees.
  4. Once completed, participants click the “I finished!” link at ReadingtheRedwoods.org to be automatically entered to win the Grand Prize.
