Sponsor Spotlight: Gixo lets parents workout from home, inside or outside

We are pleased to announce our partnership with Gixo, the fitness app that allows you to workout anytime, anywhere. Look for me in an upcoming Gixo class! Read on to see what that means.

Workout at home with Gixo app

I’ve used a lot of fitness apps and followed along to a fair number of exercise videos on YouTube. Plus, I belong to a gym. It’s not that I’m obsessed with fitness; I just like to experiment to keep myself interested.

The thing that I’m most enjoying about Gixo, which I’ve used for almost a year now, is the accountability. It’s like being in a group fitness class at a gym, except for a) I don’t have to go to a gym and b) the schedule is expansive, so there are plenty of options for workouts, with little to no advance planning.

Here’s what I mean: I open the app (which you can try free for 7 days) and look at upcoming classes.

I select a class – some are as short as 15 minutes, which means I have like, no excuse to skip it – and click Sign Up. Now I’m committed.

Before the class begins, I get a text reminder, so that I can pour myself some water and pick up any obstacles like pajamas on the floor in my workout space if it’s an indoor class. For an outdoor class, I need to get my headphones plugged in and stuff my phone into my sports bra (if you have a better way, let me know!).

When the class begins, the coach appears on the screen and greets participants, often by name. If it includes walking or running outdoors, the trainer may even tell you that you’ll have reached a mile marker at a certain street, as Gixo coaches can see where you are — and your pace — on a map. Whether you are walking or jogging, the trainer will be in your earbuds, letting you know if you’re on track to meet your goal. (Usually the goal is to beat your time from the previous segment.)

Some of the coaches are located in Europe, so there are classes offered live 19 hours out of the day. Plus, a bunch of on-demand classes can be started at any time. If you choose an on-demand class, you’ll see the coach on your screen, but won’t get any real-time feedback; the class has been pre-recorded.

My 13-year old son and I have done indoor classes together, where we both set up our phones propped against the wall in my bedroom. If you turn your camera on, which is optional, the trainer (but not other class participants) can see you and may give feedback, such as “Nice form, Whitney!” or “Ooh, Julian’s picking up the weights to add resistance!”

Announcing Fitcamp with Gixo

Gixo is challenging us to commit to three weeks of four classes per week at the same time each day, to form a new fitness habit. You’ll be in a group that will do the 40-minute classes together.

If you’ve ever considered a trainer, this could not be a more economical approach.

Fitcamp starts Sept 10 and ends Sept 27. The live, trainer-led workouts are four days per week: M – Th and you’ll need to pick one timeslot that works for you from 6:30 am, 11:45 am, 5:15 pm, or 7:00 pm PST. The workouts will include:
○ Two days of strength
○ One day of HIIT (high-intensity interval training)
○ One day of walking or running

I’ve signed up for the 6:30 slot and I’m putting that right here to make myself accountable. I hope some of you will join me!
