What makes The Academy special?

Located in Berkeley’s Elmwood neighborhood, The Academy combines truly exceptional academics (about a year ahead of state standards across all grade levels!) with small classes so students receive lots of personal attention and support. They believe students are able to achieve incredible things when they feel safe and supported.

From Kindergarten through fifth grade, each grade level is comprised of one class and one core teacher.

The Academy has been intentional about the size of its school community since being founded in 1969– long before the buzzword “micro school” started to make the rounds. They are committed to small class sizes to provide individualized attention from expert teachers to every student. When students are known and valued as individuals, their social confidence and emotional intelligence grows.

“I was amazed to see how the older children took the little ones under their wings and that they all have these phenomenal relationships,” says Daycare Supervisor Cathy Sampietro.

The advanced curriculum incorporates social emotional learning and critical thinking skills at every level. Starting in Kindergarten students also work with specialists in Science, Art, Music, PE, and French. In Middle School students begin to study Latin, Engineering, and Coding.

Justine Lewis, Director of Admissions and Marketing, commented, “As an alumna and a mother, when I talk about the school I often talk about discovering that spark, or that thirst for deep rich knowledge. I felt it myself as a student here and that I have the great joy in witnessing in my own son.”

To figure out if The Academy might be a good fit for your family, stop by an open house or schedule a private tour to see the program in action.

Upper School Dean, John Lynch, asserts, “I believe there is a natural interplay between a classical education and how our students are utilizing innovation tools like design thinking in the study of technology and engineering.”

The Academy School’s unique educational philosophy is centered on deep, meaningful learning in a supportive and inclusive environment. With over 50% students of color the school is a warm inclusive community for people of a wide variety of backgrounds. Students are challenged academically while feeling safe and supported to take intellectual risks, just as the school’s educators and administrators take on the task of redefining a classical education for a modern age.
