A Prospect Sierra Education

Science is play at Prospect Sierra transitional kindergarten

Prospect Sierra, a TK-8 independent school in El Cerrito, is widely known for giving students the tools to build a better world by integrating rigorous academics with a deep understanding of human emotions. Teachers help students connect academic experiences with ideals like ethics and empathy, and the result is deeper intellectual engagement, greater self-knowledge, and compassionate relationships.

Prospect Sierra introduces transitional kindergarten for 2019-20

Now, even younger children can experience the magic at Prospect Sierra! Prospect Sierra’s new transitional kindergarten program is designed for four- and five-year-olds who are ready to learn by doing. This new program will help younger students develop empathy, cultivate strong pre-academic skills, and find joy in learning.

To prepare young learners for the elementary experience, transitional kindergarten will provide students with daily opportunities to practice the social-emotional skills needed to identify their feelings, regulate using specific tools, and practice problem solving with friends so that they can function happily as a group; develop an awareness, appreciation, and responsibility to the natural world through daily outdoor explorations; and engage in physical learning and play that will intentionally aid in their gross and fine motor development, as well as tap into their natural curiosity. [Editor’s note: That foundation sounds incredible to me as a parent]

The transitional kindergarten experience at Prospect Sierra

Prospect Sierra’s new transitional kindergarten program is unique from preschool and kindergarten in that it intentionally builds pre-academic skills beyond the preschool experience while connecting this next level of learning to explorations outside of the classroom. Regular explorations to Canyon Trail Park, the school garden, the bunnies, and elementary buddy classrooms will be connected to learning activities within the classroom. Learning and play in innovative ways will further root children in creativity and deep dives into what intrigues them about the world.

Curriculum highlights include:

  • Daily morning meetings that include songs and stories, exposure to letters and sounds, and counting games and calendar activities
  • Indoor and outdoor learning and play
  • Arts-based activities
  • Conversations about being a classroom community, mutual respect, and cooperation
  • Opportunities to develop empathy for others and for the natural world, such as being the primary caretakers of the bunnies or composting and recycling in class
  • Weekly classes such as music, library, maker space, and physical education
  • Gardening, cooking activities, and nutrition
  • Age-appropriate mindfulness practice
