Chinese language learning is combined with fun STEAM activities at Su Yun’s

For East Bay Families with elementary school age children, Su Yun’s Chinese Learning Center is the only after-school and summer program that provides Mandarin language instruction along with hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) experiences to reinforce the language and culture.

Summer camp themes include LEGO, cooking, treasure hunts, woodworking, and more for children entering grades K through 5. Each camp registration enters a raffle for a Nintendo Switch.

Food science includes fruit battery and molecular gastronomy (sticky slime, invisible ink, etc.)

Su Yun’s Chinese Learning Center has dedicated language instruction teachers at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels as well as STEAM activity teachers who lead science experiments, art projects, cooking activities, etc. Nowhere else can you find a stage, makerspace, green screen, multimedia room, programmable robots and much more!

In order to make learning Mandarin more exciting, educators make all learning exciting: to date, they have built bristle bots and bean sorters, learned about liquid density, programmed a robot to travel through a cardboard maze, and made dumplings. Educators provide students with tools and guidance and allow them to develop their own creative solutions. Team projects promote collaboration and greater understanding. What exciting concept will your child master in Mandarin?

Children get lots of opportunities for hands-on science experiments; STEAM activities reinforce the language and culture

Founders, Michele and Keske, are an Albany husband and wife team with 3 young children – ages ranging from 4 to 8. They created the program they wanted for their own family: an after-school and summer program that was enriching for their children combining STEAM activities with Mandarin language learning. Michele says, “We live in a global economy where it is important to learn multiple languages and to have cultural dexterity. Studies have shown that young learners have an innate ability to learn and pick up languages.”

What satisfied parents say about Su Yun’s Chinese Learning Center

My son is in kindergarten and recently started at Su Yun’s. We love it there! He has so much fun learning and tinkering that he never wants to leave when I pick him up! Michele and the teachers are kind and gentle, and they really value learning the language through play and exploration.

There are lots of enrichment activities for the kids, with project stations for kitchen experiments, music, a green screen, theater/dress up, and an awesome maker space. They do plenty of cultural arts and crafts as well. Michele is so calm and thoughtful in her approach with guiding the kids through age-appropriate projects.

My son is always coming home eager to show me what he created that day. I also appreciate the range of kids with heritage backgrounds and no prior language experience, so that there was a place for my son along that spectrum. He is thriving and having so much fun learning Chinese at Su Yun’s! We feel so lucky to be there.
