Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving can take a busy parent by surprise. Whether your child’s school is closed all week or just a couple days, we figured you might be looking for a little support. I have been known to splurge on a last minute winter camp when I realized how many hours of unplanned awake time we’d all be spending together. Don’t judge.
Berkeley Unified School District is closed on November 7 and 11th in addition to the 23rd, while many Oakland schools are closed the 21st to 23rd in addition to the 11th. JCC East Bay has parents covered with School’s Out camp days in three East Bay locations. Read on for more details.

Three East Bay locations offer programming for school’s out days including Veteran’s Day and Mon-Weds of Thanksgiving week. Programming features healthy snacks, outside play, and field trips to local fun places like museums and arcades. $68/day for members; $80s for non-members. Details and registration >
Abundant Beginnings (Berkeley or Oakland)
While Abundant Beginnings programs usually focus on social justice activities, the one-day camps have a lighter-weight treatment of these topics. November 7th and 11th camps are called School Break Camps while Nov 21-23 is Giving-Thanks Camp. Abundant Beginning holds their camps at Strawberry Creek Park or Roberts Park. Get the details >
At this sports and fitness complex, kids will play sports, organized games, and even have some LEGO time. Bladium is offering camp for both November 11 and all three days before Thanksgiving. The price is $69 per day for ages 5-14. Lunch and snacks are provided. More info >

Head over Heels gymnastics camp (Emeryville)
For ages 4-11, daily camp will be offered from 9 to 4 for $75 per day on November 18. Details and registration >
Kinetic Arts Center (Oakland)
Offering Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving “Circo Camp”, Kinetic Arts Center is a space where students will swing from trapezes and learn acrobatic skills, burning a ton of energy throughout the day. Parents are warned to pack an extra large lunchbox. More info >
Oakland ZooCamp (Oakland)
Thanksgiving Camp includes a full day of fun at the Zoo, including behind-the-scenes activities for K-5th graders, such as making snacks for the animals. Runs 9 am to 4 pm and costs $75/day for Zoo members; $80/day for non-members. Zoofari program 11/21-11/22 and Nature Play on 11/23. More info >
Sarah’s Science (Oakland) For ages 5-11 as campers, and 11-14 as CITs, this science program is offered Monday through Wednesday of Thanksgiving week, with day rates available if you don’t need all three days. Campers will learn about the science of animation through a series of hands-on projects that they get to make and take home with them each day. Hours: 8:00 to 5:30. Location: Lake Merritt United Methodist Church. Cost: $115/day. Details and registration >
This immersive outdoor experience is offered for November 7 and 11 from 9-3.30 with flexible drop off and pick up times starting at 8 am with no extra charge. Pick up by 4 pm. Grades 1-9 will learn survival skills for the outdoors, making fire, staying warm. Camp meets up in Berkeley and travels around during the day. More info >
