Tickets are now available for the Magical Christmas Train by River Fox out of West Sacramento. Book ahead to choose your perfect time slot and start planning your holiday jammies (matching? ironic? kids only?!).

The special holiday train ride departs from a boarding area just off Old River Road. Each car is decorated with its own holiday theme. Our family’s favorite was the Grinch-themed car, which had a Christmas tree filled with board games to choose from and play during the ride. Seating was a bit confusing, but it appeared to be first come first served so arriving early gives you the best chance at selecting your preferred car.
During the one-hour round-trip ride, your family will be treated to hot cocoa and cookies, visits from Mrs. Claus and her elves, and plenty of photo opportunities. The elves also lead carols and offer board games to keep everyone entertained.
Be prepared for varying temperatures: some cars were quite warm while others were chilly so dressing in layers is your best bet. While they ask that guests avoid bringing outside food, we brought crackers for the kids and no one seemed to mind. Concessions are available in the bar car as well (credit card only).
At the end of the ride, guests disembark into a charming holiday village complete with snow and cheerful decorations. Families can line up for a chance to meet Santa and snap a few photos with him.

This magical railway experience is open to kids of all ages but is probably best for those with the most Christmas Spirit. If your children enjoy sing-alongs or think trains are especially awesome, they will be thrilled! We took an evening train, which added to the festive spirit, but I think my young train-loving kids would have appreciated a daytime trip so they could enjoy looking out the windows.
