FLAX art & design, the Bay Area’s oldest art supply business runs a terrific flagship store in a huge downtown Oakland shop. They run periodic workshops using all sorts of artistic materials. If you are creative or aspire to be artsy in any way, you just have to check it out!
As a twenty-something in San Francisco, I walked by the gloriously creative FLAX art & design on Market Street countless times. The exterior alone was inspiring with its bright colors and goofy artist mannequin figures popping out all over. Wandering the aisles of shelves caused me to buy oil paints, large canvas, pretty paper, and dozens of other supplies that evolved into weird projects and gifts for friends. As with my own migration, San Francisco’s loss is the East Bay’s gain.
