Head Over Heels youth gymnastics: get your wiggles out

Calling all parents whose kids need to get their wiggles out and develop balance, coordination and strength. Can’t think of a better place than Head Over Heels Athletic Arts (or HOH) youth gymnastics and preschool gymnastics.

Head Over Heels is a youth gymnastics and preschool gymnastics center in Emeryville with two gyms, and three options to visit:

  1. Open Gym
  2. Weekly classes, which you pay for monthly
  3. Birthday Parties, but that’s a whole other topic

Head Over Heels Open Gym

Open Gym, (ages 2+) is hosted in HOH larger, main gym Monday through Saturday. Double check their schedule online. Participation is available on a first come, first serve basis and sessions last 90 minutes. Admission is currently $12 on weekdays and $17 on Saturday.

HOH Weekly classes

Weekly classes are hosted either in their preschool gym for ages five and under, or the larger main gym for older children. If you’re looking to commit monthly, but not sure which class or coach is a good fit, you can sign up for a trial class. You just have call to register.

For children five and under, HOH offers classes in their preschool gym for children starting at 18 months old. Under three years old, parents actively participate, or “spot” their child in class. Parent participation is no longer required after three-years old. The preschool gym also has child size potties, a changing table and tables with coloring sheets, and crayons. There is also a sitting/viewing room for parents to sit during classes. We used this area to play with my younger daughter, while my older daughter was taking her class.

The classes in the preschool gym have an obstacle course layout so children have plenty of variety to see what they are capable of physically. The gyms feature balance beams, trampolines, foam pits, monkey bars, uneven bars, floor exercises and more. In my experience they change the obstacle course flow every week.

Both gyms have:

  • Free wifi
  • Parent/family seating areas, some with tables, crayons and coloring pages
  • Snacks and drinks for purchase
  • Stroller parking

Parking at Head Over Heels, good luck with that

Parking can be scarce, but there are HOH reserved spots on Spur Alley. If you visit during weekday school hours, park in the reserved spaces on Spur Alley. If you visit on the weekends, there is free street parking closer to the preschool gym on Doyle St. and 47th St.

Bottom line: the facilities are clean and the classes are fun. The programs and staff are organized. Drop in for open gym, or a trial class if your looking into youth gymnastics in the East Bay.

Bonus tip: the newly remodeled Target Emeryville is a mere 4 minutes away should you need to run errands after class.
