Swim Lessons at Patti’s
My four-year-old boys recently started taking swim lessons at Patti’s Swim School and the quick 30-minute drive from Berkeley has been completely worth it. We left Karl the Fog behind and arrived in Castro Valley to warm sunshine and perfect swim conditions, making lessons even more enjoyable. The pool water is also nicely heated which was a big hit for my kids who tend to have lots of opinions regarding water temperature.

My Kids’ Swimming Experience
My boys were eager to jump in after meeting their instructor, Ezra. Within minutes, they were happily blowing bubbles and bobbing up and down. This was a big surprise since neither of them had ever been big fans of getting their faces wet. Seeing them relax and try something new so quickly felt like a huge milestone.
Having a dedicated teacher allowed each child to learn at their own pace and focus on building confidence in different ways. While one of my boys was excited to practice floating on his back and diving underwater, the other was more interested in kicking, splashing, and becoming more comfortable moving through the water. Ezra did a wonderful job engaging with them based on their individual personality and comfort level.
Patti’s Swim School offers seven swim levels based on skill set. My children started at Level 1 and have been working on skills such as front-and-back floating, front-to-back rolls, and flutter kicks. After just three lessons, I noticed a huge difference in their swimming abilities and was surprised by how quickly they were picking up new skills. Once they complete the Level 2 requirements, they will be considered swim-safe while continuing to build and learn new techniques.

Another highlight was the nice setup surrounding the pool. There’s comfortable poolside seating where adults can sit back and watch lessons. It almost felt like a mini kid-free poolside getaway. The school also offers two private changing rooms and a private shower room, which makes the experience even more convenient for families. I appreciated that everything felt very clean and well-maintained. A small play structure outside was another nice touch. It helped encourage my kids to transition out of the pool after lessons and provided an easy way to entertain siblings who might not be patiently waiting.
