Known to the world as Dr. Thomishia Booker, Meet East Bay parent, Mishi Booker, owner and author of Hey Carter! Books (HBC).
“Children of color deserve to read books that look like them and reflect their experiences,” says Mishi. Her first book, My Brown Skin, is a heartwarming story about embracing who you are. HBC strives to increase diversity in children’s books.
We invited Mishi to answer a few questions for us about her favorite places to go with Carter.
Q. What’s your favorite playground?
A. Heather Farms in Walnut Creek is my favorite, but there’s also a cute little park attached to the Concord Library that we love to visit.
Q. Do you have a date night tip for East Bay parent?
A. Downtown Walnut Creek. We start at Residual Sugar for drinks. He always has a beer and I have champagne. They have great music. We love Lima (Peruvian cuisine) which just opened a few months ago.
Q. What Bay Area spot makes for a cool birthday party?
A. The Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco
Q. How does the perfect Sunday morning go for you?
A. Most Sunday mornings start with a long hike, followed by picking up our favorites at the Farmers Market. We grab granola, fresh juice, and whatever other yummy snacks they have. We head home for a nap, watch the Warriors game, and order pizza.
Q. What’s your favorite thing to do at home as a family?
A. We love to play music and dance together. We call it “Club B”.
Q. Is there a dinner spot you recommend to families with little ones?
A. We love to try new restaurants, especially as a family. We love Broderick in Walnut Creek because they serve their full menu all day. We also love pupusas, so I suggest Restaurante El Salvador in Concord.
Q. How do you like to treat yourself when you have alone time?
A. I was recently introduced to Korean spas which are a life-changer. Check out Pearl Spa in San Francisco and thank me later. I also love going to Target and strolling the aisles for things I don’t need, a mani and pedi is always my go-to!
