Today we have tips from Berkeley mom Shira Gill, a world-renowned organizing expert and the bestselling author of three books: Minimalista, Organized Living, and LifeStyled. She’s a sought-after expert for media outlets so we are excited that she answered our email, although full disclosure: our daughters are pals.
Let’s jump in! What’s an easy birthday party spot for an East Bay family who can’t host at home?
Arthur Macs Tap & Snack is a fun and free party venue that checks all the boxes for a stress-free celebration. Kids have plenty of space to run around and play while parents can relax knowing everyone will be happy with crowd-pleasing pizza and soft serve. The real bonus? The venue is equipped with classic arcade games like Super Mario Brothers and Ms. Pac-Man, which keep kids entertained for hours. Bring your appetite and a bunch of quarters, and let the games begin. No reservation required, no cleanup needed, amen! (Editor’s note: There is a reservation fee to save a large space at Arthur Macs if you want to be sure to have a table for your group.)

What’s your favorite Saturday morning routine when you have kids with you?
On weekends, we love strolling to the Temescal farmer’s market to pick up fresh flowers and produce for the week. The kids enjoy browsing the stalls, sampling seasonal fruit, and choosing a bouquet for our kitchen table. Afterward, we make the short walk to nearby Curbside Creamery for fresh chocolate waffle cones—yes, ice cream before lunch is absolutely a weekend move in our house! It’s the perfect combination of getting errands done while making the morning feel special and unhurried.
What activity or resource do you want to tell every new parent about?
Babysitting co-ops! We joined the Elmwood Babysitting Co-Op when our kids were 4 and 6, and it honestly changed our lives in so many profound ways that went far beyond saving a gazillion dollars on childcare. The co-op exposed our kids to dozens of new playmates from different families and backgrounds, connected us deeply with our local community, and made us feel that we truly had a village during the challenging early parenting years. Knowing we had trusted neighbors to call on for childcare—and that we could reciprocate—gave us both freedom and peace of mind. It’s one of those resources that enriches your whole family’s life in unexpected ways. More on this here!

What’s your favorite restaurant for a family dinner out?
Ramen Shop is a family favorite that never disappoints. They have kid-friendly options like dumplings and kid ramen alongside more adventurous donburi bowls for adults, so everyone leaves satisfied. The communal tables and casual vibe mean you don’t have to stress about noise levels or kids squirming in their seats. And here’s the perfect finish: you can head right next door to Bad Walters for a scoop of creative ice cream flavors afterward. It’s a truly perfect night out—delicious food, easy atmosphere, and a sweet ending that makes the kids feel like they hit the jackpot.
Tell us about an amazing class or activity your child has done.
We’re a food-loving family—my brother is a professional chef—and our girls absolutely loved the walking food tours with Edible Excursions, a small, woman-owned operation running since 2004. Their knowledgeable guides, including award-winning food writers, chefs, and food TV alumni, lead you through iconic East Bay destinations. You’ll savor housemade pastrami sandwiches and artisan soda at Saul’s, visit the flagship Peet’s Coffee location, sample pizza-of-the-day and gourmet cheese from the historic Cheese Board Collective, learn about sustainable whole-animal butchery at The Local Butcher Shop, and more. Best suited for older kids and teens, it’s a special and memorable family outing—or a perfect clutter-free gift for the holidays.
Ooh, thanks for the tips, Shira!
