Oakland mom Emily Goldenberg is a wealth of knowledge about the world of East Bay family resources, having spent 15 years running retail stores that cater to them. We asked her to make some recommendations to you all. Read on for our interview with Emily.

If you were trying to entertain a 5-year-old, screen-free, for the better part of the day, what would be your itinerary?
My go-to spot has always been the Oakland Zoo. We always head straight for the Gondola up to the California Trail, especially on hot days when the “stream” is flowing. Bring a lunch for an easy picnic in the shade. After the Zoo, we like to hit Flavor Brigade in the Dimond District for ice cream (shop small!) and then calm it down for the day with a trip to the Dimond Branch Library right across the street.
What is your favorite East Bay playground?
My all-time fave is FROG Park. I have played endless games of tag, going in, out, up, and around the really cool wooden play structure. And I especially loved it when my kids were really young because it is fenced in. There is something special about FROG park that makes it great for a variety of ages! Even better? Merge a trip to FROG Park with the Temescal Farmers Market on Sundays from 9 am – 1 pm.
What’s one activity you think new East Bay parents should know about?
I’m super excited to share my brand-new class for parents and caregivers — Shimmy with Your Sidekick! This 45-minute dance session is all about moving, grooving, and connecting while you wear your baby. It’s gentle, low-impact fun that gets you out of the house, helps you meet other new parents, and adds a little joy to your day. Perfect for babies ages 0–18 months — and amazing for 3rd-trimester mamas, too! Register here and find me on Instagram @EmilyIsGoldenZumba
What’s your favorite local restaurant for dinner out with kids?
I’ve always loved Picante in Berkeley. The food is delish and it is spacious enough for kids who have extra wiggles!
What’s your favorite toy store?
I’m a big fan of Five Little Monkeys. Their stores really do have all the cool things! They host fun events for kids at their various Bay Area locations. Definitely check them out and join their mailing list. It is a locally-owned company that just keeps growing because it is so well-loved.
Can you tell us about an annual event you look forward to?
Yes! And it is coming up soon! Every year, our family of four hitches a ride with @californiapedicab for the sweetest, most nostalgic, pedalled trip through Alameda’s Christmas Tree lane. I suggest having a look at their instagram page and signing up early in the season to make sure you get a spot. We sport our winter hats, gloves, and bring a thermos of hot chocolate while we enjoy the 45-minute wild ride full of lights and holiday tunes. (Book a spot here >)
