Aurora’s historic campus features outdoor spaces, including a schoolyard, playing field, and the Garden Forest, where students can learn, move, and play.

Teachers at the Aurora School in Oakland’s Upper Rockridge neighborhood are committed to academic excellence and problem-solving skills, with a focus on social-emotional and project-based learning.

My daughter is now a senior in high school. So many times she’s said she feels that going to Aurora has given her an advantage in terms of her SE intelligence, her confidence, her willingness to take risks as a learner, her love for learning. I think Aurora does an amazing job.

Small classes ensure all children are celebrated for who they are.

Learning at Aurora happens in multi-grade classrooms, where students in grades K/1, 2/3, 4/5, and middle school share learning spaces. Older students have the opportunity to mentor younger students, who become mentors themselves the next year. The Middle School curriculum features experiential, project-based learning.

The beauty about Aurora is it’s small and they’re able to offer a breadth of what they’re able to offer your children they don’t all have to fit into one mold, or one range of learning styles. They’re really able to meet your child where they’re at.

Aurora Middle School’s students undertake six-week Quests in STEM and humanities, where they explore a question through classroom learning, guest speakers, hands-on learning, and off-campus excursions. They then develop their findings into interdisciplinary presentations for teachers, peers, and parents.

Social-emotional learning is essential to the curriculum, with an emphasis on self-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

An Aurora education is grounded in STEM and humanities, along with art, music, Spanish, library, and physical education.
