Spotlight on EBI’s Inquiry-Driven, Play-Based Preschool Program

Known locally as EBI, private school Escuela Bilingüe Internacional is our sponsor today.

For East Bay Families seeking a school that nurtures their child’s natural curiosity in a supportive and engaging environment, Escuela Bilingüe Internacional (EBI) is a PK-8 Bilingual IB program designed to prepare students to thrive in a changing world.

EBI’s pre-kinder (PK) and transitional kindergarten (TK) program at EBI is play-based, encouraging children to explore, create and learn from one another. Using a positive approach to learning through play, EBI introduces its youngest students to the school environment in a way that fosters a love for learning. Children engage in hands-on experiences that promote social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth, all within a safe and nurturing setting.

What parents say

My son has been a student at EBI for 11 years, since he was 3 1/2 years old. He has developed confidence, critical thinking skills, and the ability to be self-reflective. He is able to think about who he is, how he shows up in spaces, and what he brings, or takes from his community. I am grateful to EBI for teaching my son how to think critically and creatively, and to have the confidence to fully be himself.

Continuing seamlessly into a comprehensive Spanish bilingual education with an international perspective, EBI serves students from PK through Grade 8 across two East Bay campuses. The Alcatraz campus hosts PK through Grade 1, while the Emeryville campus is home to Grades 2 through 8. EBI is the only school on the West Coast authorized to offer both the Primary Years Program (PYP) and Middle Years Program (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB) in Spanish and English. The IB curriculum develops globally minded students with strong character, empathy, and the skills to succeed in an interconnected world.

EBI teachers receive training in constructivist teaching, positive discipline, anti-bias classroom practices, and mindfulness. Students engage with topics of global significance such as caring for living things, protecting the environment, understanding family structures, respecting differences, and exploring how communities function. With a strong emphasis on social-emotional development, EBI fosters personal well-being as a foundation for academic success.

From the Principal

According to a Harvard research study conducted by the child psychologist Paul Harris, we know that children between the ages of 2 and 5 ask around 40,000 questions, which means that children typically ask 200 questions on a daily basis . With that in mind, we want children’s questions to be our guiding light when it comes to developing instruction so that it is engaging, motivating and stimulating. We also want kids to answer their own questions. The teacher’s role is to create playful situations that allow these questions to be answered. To sum it all up, play-based instruction and inquiry based learning are at the core of our EBI program and children are our driving force.
