Cunamacué, is an Oakland arts organization dedicated to promoting Afro-Peruvian culture through its music and dance. This intergenerational class is an introduction to Afro-Peruvian culture through dance.
The name Cunamacué is a reminder that their work is based on ancestral roots and meant to be left for future generations. The word macué is representative of the ancestors; it is a stream in Mozambique, one of the places from which Africans were uprooted and taken to Perú. Cuna is the Spanish word for crib, representing future. Cunamacué contributes to a more just world by amplifying the history, culture, voices, and ideas of African descendants from Peru using music and dance as the vehicle for transformation.
