Tutu School, a chain of boutique ballet schools that cater to the littlest of aspiring twirlers, has been around for 8 years, founded by a San Francisco professional ballerina at the end of her dancing career. This July, Montclair Village in Oakland will see the opening of its own Tutu School, run by Tracy Gonzalez, owner of the year-old Walnut Creek Tutu School location.
The offering – for kids who love tutus
Classes at Tutu School are designed for children 18 months to 8 years old, tailored to the developmental stages of those ages. Tracy explained that in contrast to a traditional ballet school that trains adolescents and adults, and who has added preschool classes to fill their schedule, “Tutu School is committed to engaging children at their own level, to make dancing fun with storytelling, props and creative movement, beyond ballet.”
The students will be fully immersed in the world of ballet. Classes teach more than the proper dance positions; children are invited into the plotlines of the great ballets, Cinderella, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker, with a story time during their class. Teachers provide exposure to classic ballet music and encourage children to respond.
Based on other Tutu School locations, Tracy tells us that the most popular class will be Tutu Toddlers, for 18-month olds to 3 year olds. This is a parent participation class and will be offered several times each day.
Registration for Tutu School in Montclair is open now, but classes begin on July 5. There are no sessions, so you can enroll at anytime at a monthly rate.
This summer, new students are invited to take their class as many times as they like each week.
