When should children have their first visit to the dentist?

Experts recommend that children have their first dental visit by age 1, or within six months of the first tooth coming in.

It is important to have a full exam of the teeth, jaws, bites, gums, and oral tissues to check growth and development. A pediatric dentist can provide expert counseling on oral hygiene, teething, diet, nutrition, injury prevention, and more!

An early visit helps prevent your child from developing the most common chronic disease affecting children: tooth decay. Approximately 28% of American children between the ages of 2 and 5 already have cavities by the time they see a dentist. When left untreated, tooth decay can rapidly destroy entire teeth and can lead to infections that become medical emergencies. Prevention is key, so schedule your child’s visit promptly.

Starting dental visits early prevents tooth decay, avoids pain, reduces dental-related costs, and sets kids up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

What about orthodontics?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children be evaluated by an orthodontist around the age of 7. At Alameda Pediatric Dentistry, the dentists work closely with the orthodontists to help your child achieve their best smile, by monitoring the strength and health of the teeth every step of the way.

They specialize in early treatment to guide your child’s smile to grow to its full potential, which oftentimes helps avoid more complicated, expensive treatment in the future. Alameda Pediatric Dentistry provides comprehensive care and coordinated appointments. With both specialties in the same place, you can have your cleaning and ortho adjustment completed in the same afternoon! Fewer appointments mean less driving around, reduced costs, and more quality time.
