OWLS Program Gets Homeschool Students Outdoors - 510 Families

OWLS Program Gets Homeschool Students Outdoors

For East Bay homeschooling families, the OWLS program, an offering from Seeds of Love Collective, invites neurodiverse learners ages 6-11 to enjoy authentic, hands-on learning experiences outdoors.

We are thrilled to add Seeds of Love Collective to our family of sponsors. Seeds of Love provided the information and photos in this article.

The Open Wilderness Literacy and Science (OWLS) curriculum is inspired by nature and the unique interests of the students. Each week, educator Brooke Mitschang utilizes nature as her classroom, either at El Cerrito’s Camp Herms or in the Tilden Nature Area, to encourage exploration, creativity, and scientific discovery.

One parent explains that Brooke is “passionate about reaching each individual learner where they are.”

“Each week’s curriculum is thoughtfully planned out with educational goals for individual and group learning alike.”

So that parents can follow up with further learning and activities, OWLS families receive a newsletter each week with a summary of activities, photos, helpful links, and recommended outings for extending the lessons. (See a sample!)

Plan a Visit Day With OWLS

Students are invited to a first visit with the group at a reduced rate before signing up for a session. Email [email protected] to request a visit day!

What Parents Are Saying

“I’m so glad we found this program! My son has been attending 2 days a week and it’s such a lovely complement to our homeschooling curriculum. I love knowing he’s spending full days outside in nature with peers while also learning literacy and science! A visit day was a great way to check out the program before we made a longer commitment.”

“My child participates in this program and loves it. She loves the friends she made, she loves her teacher. This program is very well organized and offers an amazing amount of resources and learning opportunities for the kids!”
