Spotlight on East Bay German International School (EBGIS)

Thank you to East Bay German International School, EBGIS, for sponsoring 510families.com.

For East Bay families with children ages two through high school, the East Bay German International School (EBGIS) offers an exceptional bilingual and multicultural education. Its integrated curriculum features project-based learning and an international perspective. Small class sizes allow EBGIS teachers to nurture and support each student based on their unique needs.

EBGIS Early Childhood Program

For ages two through kindergarten, the EBGIS Early Childhood Program employs a play-based and project-oriented approach widely used in Germany. The highly trained and experienced international faculty uses early immersion principles to expand children’s communicative competencies in German and English. The pre-academic curriculum includes language, intercultural studies, science, mathematics, music, movement, and art, and is taught in an engaging and developmentally appropriate way.

No prior knowledge of German is needed for admission to the Early Childhood program at EBGIS (the majority of EBGIS families do not speak German at home). These families choose EBGIS for its unparalleled educational offerings and to give their children the gift of multilingualism.

Accelerated German Studies (AGS)

In 2021, EBGIS launched its Accelerated German Studies (AGS) for students joining the elementary grades with little or no knowledge of German. Tailored group and individual sessions with bilingual faculty allow these students to quickly achieve proficiency in German and integrate successfully into the academic program.

A Spacious Emeryville Campus

EBGIS’s spacious and centrally located Emeryville campus features large classrooms, dedicated spaces for music, art, and science, two bilingual libraries, a newly-renovated auditorium, athletic fields, and ample indoor and outdoor play spaces. The school’s commitment to health and the environment can be seen in its campus sustainability practices, as well as its eco-literacy curriculum and extracurricular activities.

EBGIS International Baccalaureate High School

In 2021, EBGIS welcomed its first high school students with its inaugural ninth-grade class. The EBGIS High School will grow year upon year, graduating its first twelfth graders in 2025. EBGIS graduates will receive the prestigious bilingual International Baccalaureate diploma as well as California high school diploma.

A Hub of German-American Culture

EBGIS also serves as a hub of German-American culture for the entire Bay Area. Annual events open to the community include the Lantern Festival in November, the Fasching (German Carnival) celebration in February, and the EBGIS International Summer Fest in May.
