Thanks to School of the Madeleine, a vibrant and inclusive K-8 Catholic school in Berkeley, for sponsoring {510} Families.
“Let’s Be Good to One Another and Pass It On.”
Madeleine students have enthusiastically exclaimed this phrase at every morning assembly for decades, and it lays the foundation for a nurturing environment of learning and community.
The Madeleine curriculum combines a mix of creativity, critical thinking and communication skills to best prepare students for high school and beyond. From Art in Action to Shakespeare to the Science Fair, there are a number of academically oriented special events each year that engage the whole school.
Extracurricular enrichment activities include Drama, Sports, Dance, Art, Chess, Speech and Debate. More than 50 students participate in the school band each year and two-thirds of the student body — from Kindergarten through 8th grade — participate in Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) sports programs, including basketball, volleyball, cross country and track and field.
The Madeleine community is diverse, welcoming, and committed to student success. Grounded in the four Dominican pillars of Prayer, Study, Community, and Service, the community is focused on academic excellence, service to others, social justice and equality, and environmental stewardship.
The Madeleine also offers an extended care program, affordable after-school enrichment, exercise, and homework support until 6:00 pm on school days.

What about financial aid?
The administration is committed to ensuring that a Madeleine education is accessible and affordable to as many families as possible; multiple avenues of financial support are available.
What does a Madeleine education include?
School of the Madeleine nurtures the whole student—mind, body, and spirit. It is committed to helping them grow into curious, thoughtful, and empathetic individuals who are not only well-prepared for future academic challenges but also equipped to be active participants in making the world a better place. Students engage in service projects both within and beyond the school community at all grade levels, putting what they learn about social justice into practice, and making time for reflection.
The Madeleine employs a partner-teacher model for grades K-5, which includes a full-time teacher and partner teacher (3 days/per week). Middle school classes have a homeroom humanities teacher and subject-area teachers in math and science. All teachers are credentialed, many with advanced certifications or degrees. A school counselor is on staff 3 days/week, plus specialist teachers are employed for Math and Science; Spanish; Music; Technology; Library; and PE.
The school aims to teach children to see the world not just as it is, but as it could be—empowered with the tools and values to enact positive change. They celebrate diversity in the classroom, and are deeply committed to fostering an environment where all students, faculty and families belong. The Madeleine welcomes families from all backgrounds, recognizing that the principles of love, community, and respect are universal and timeless.

What parents are saying
The Madeleine exemplifies the best of the Catholic school tradition, combined with innovative and adaptable modern educational practices. The school is a community, and responsive to the needs of the students and families. A single visit is all it takes to “feel” the sense of family and community.
All of us feel held in community at the Madeleine. Teachers and staff pay attention. We can see our child growing into an independent, curious, self-aware, responsible person.
The School of the Madeleine partners with parents to raise our children from the heart. A strong moral compass and character formation are our first concern, and Catholic education holds these same priorities. Each day that we leave our children at school we feel they are being cared for by family.
