The El Cerrito Trail Trekkers are proud to host the tenth annual El Cerrito Hillside Festival on May 4-5 in El Cerrito’s 100-acre gem, the Hillside Natural Area. There’s something for everyone at the festival, including guided, informative hikes about the geology, trees, edible and medicinal plants, birds, lichen, and El Cerrito history. Family-friendly events include a nature scavenger hunt, crafting from nature, art in the trees, and the ever-popular insect hike. People of all ages can learn how to use apps to identify flora and fauna or enter a haiku contest and hear the winners recite their poetry on a haiku hike. Hikes range from strenuous to easy. Events last the entire day, however families may enjoy:
- 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Family-friendly Rockhound Gathering. Learn about the geology of the East Bay Hills
- Anytime between 1 and 3 p.m. Nature Scavenger Hunt. Learn about plants, birds, animals, rocks, and creeks. Parents help their children in this fun drop-in event
- 2 to 5 p.m. Crafting From Nature. Come make recycled paper, integrating dried plants found in the Hillside Natural Area.
