Birthday treat: Unicorn donuts at Rainbow Donuts

Hosting a birthday party and need a simple treat to serve? We like donuts as birthday goodies because you don’t have to slice them and you don’t even really need a plate.

I discovered Rainbow Donuts in Berkeley recently and thought their unicorn donuts were so adorable, I could buy nine of them for a nine-kid birthday party and be done!

Had a rough morning and need some donut therapy? Read on.

Rainbow Donuts is on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley, one storefront south of University Avenue. The set up is nothing fancy: your typical donut shop that sells drip coffee, donuts, and lottery tickets, but a few hipster touches have been added to make it feel updated.

What makes it worth writing about in this space is the extra-cute donuts they sell. I was particularly in love with this Cookie Monster-inspired one, which is also available in Oscar the Grouch style, depending on the day.

I also purchased a maple bacon donut, just cause, and the unicorn donut, as a reward for my kid who had gotten through a very long day. The glass-front display case also includes donuts topped with Fruity Pebbles, Capn’ Crunch, and of course sprinkles of every color, including a psychedelic assortment of sprinkles and marshmallows called Unicorn Poop.

Select a dozen donuts and bring them to one of these free or cheap party venues and you’ve got a great birthday celebration!

What to expect at Rainbow Donuts in Berkeley

Both San Pablo and University have only metered spots, so parking is not easy, but not impossible.

The menu includes egg and cheese sandwiches on both croissants and bagels, for those who like protein before their sugar. They are open at 5 am for you early risers!

The donuts are both delicious and affordable, really! See more beautiful donuts on the @rainbowdonutsberkeley Instagram page.

Rainbow Donuts is at 2025 San Pablo Avenue.
