Berkwood Hedge School Offers Interdisciplinary Program for Grades K-8

Thanks to Berkwood Hedge School, a K-8 independent school with free upcoming parent workshops open to everyone, for sponsoring {510} Families. Learn more at their website >

Berkwood Hedge School is well-known for thematic project-based, hands-on curriculum that promotes deep learning and engagement, and has long been a leader in progressive education and social and environmental justice.

The lower grades program, K-4, is on Bancroft Way in Central Berkeley, and the middle school grades from 5-8 have a campus on Scenic Avenue in the Berkeley Hills. At both levels, students engage in independent and group work, through which they experiment, discuss, question, build, and invent, accessing a range of learning strategies and ways of sharing their thought processes.

Berkwood Hedge School’s Project-Based Learning program creates unique opportunities for deep interdisciplinary study, even in the youngest grades. The third grade project, Sí, Se Puede, covers the intersection of sustainable farming, farm worker justice, and food waste. Students research the history of farming and the farm workers’ movement, collect and analyze data, visit local sustainable farms, and present their findings through informational writing and oral presentation to the school community. Eighth graders study real world applications of percentages and statistics through the lens of access to drinking water in different communities. Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students find their Latin studies integrated into their literacy lessons, while middle school students see crossover between their Latin, Social Studies, and Language Arts work.

There is nothing as amazing as seeing your kid truly love learning, because this is the school that does not just push memorizing facts, but really somehow maintains the sense of awe and wonder the kids inherently have — without extinguishing it by requiring the completion of 1 million worksheets. Instead they do project-based learning and deeply explore topics.
