A walk through the Edible Schoolyard garden is an ideal way to entertain visiting grandparents and small kids at the same time. This teaching garden offers a thriving acre of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers. The Edible Schoolyard garden is also home to a small water feature and a chicken coop that never fails to entertain kids.

Situated behind Hopkins Park and the King Middle School track, the garden can be accessed by following staircases from the back of the King Middle School campus toward the left – or by parking at a dead end on Berryman Street, just past Josephine.
In the late Spring, the plants and flowers are blooming and it’s just lovely. Plus, it’s free!
Foodies will appreciate this Alice Waters-inspired project. Most of the vegetables and fruit trees are labeled with student-painted signs. You’ll notice a bungalow adjacent to the garden. This building houses a kitchen classroom that allows students to work with the plants harvested from the garden as part of their middle school curriculum. Gathering spots have been designed within the garden to allow outdoor classroom discussions. Little ones love to climb on these benches and hay bales and jump off!

New parents looking for a babywearing stroll might enjoy walking along the Hopkins Street shops between Sacramento and McGee before heading up towards the King Track. Cross the track and look for stairs that take you up toward the garden.
